Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Employee and Labour Relations, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing advice and guidance to managers and supervisors on the consistent application and interpretation of Human Resources policies, procedures, employment/labour legislation and collective agreements. The successful candidate will also contribute to collective bargaining processes and provide expertise and support to managers and supervisors in the effective resolution of workplace disputes.

 

Due to COVID-19, most of our offices are currently closed to protect the health and safety of our employees, clients and community. As such, this position will be required to work remotely for an undetermined period. Once our offices re-open you will report to 300 City Centre Drive, Mississauga.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with labour and employment legislation/regulations.
  • Work closely with Legal Counsel to represent the City's interests in mediation, arbitration and at tribunals. 
  • Support bargaining teams, contribute to the development of bargaining strategies at designated bargaining tables and may be asked to act as spokesperson at designated bargaining tables.  
  • Work as a strategic partner with Management to resolve workplace issues and grievances.
  • Support workplace investigations in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Policy.
  • Participate in the City's Long Term Accommodation process.
  • Undertake various research projects to support policy development and collective bargaining.
  • Make informed recommendations to decision makers on complex employee and labour relations issues.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

  • University degree in the field of Human Resources Management, Business, Industrial Relations or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years progressive Human Resources experience.
  • Master's degree in Industrial Relations and direct experience working with representatives of a trade union are considered valuable assets. 
  • Knowledge, experience and expertise in the area of collective agreement administration and workplace dispute resolution is required. 
  • Excellent problem solving.
  • Strong ability to influence outcomes, verbal and written communications skills as well as strong research organizational and analytical skills.
  • Must have the ability to travel to various locations.

Successful candidates should be prepared for rotation between departments, with appropriate notice, in order to fill vacancies, provide developmental opportunities for staff and to support the operational needs of the client departments.
